Super Mario Bros. is one of the most popular and influential games ever released in video game history. It was first published on the Famicom in Japan and on the Nintendo Entertainment System worldwide. It was the Famicom's best-selling game. Approximately 6,810,000 copies ever sold, four times as many as the next best selling game - Soccer. It was one of two games that had a significant impact on the resurgence of the depressive US video game market in the mid-80s. The other game was The Legend of Zelda and both games were created by world-renowned game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.
While the Super Mario game is a sequel to the original Mario Bros., it is the first game in the famous Super Mario series. Although it was not the first side-scrolling game (Pac-Land Namco came out a year before Super Mario Bros.), it was the most popular and arguably influenced the genre's success for many years to come. Prior to the game's popularity in the United States, Nintendo released a special Arcade version of the game called Vs. Super Mario Bros., which contains mostly modded levels as well as a few new ones.
